I have had a number of clients over the past several years who had Saltillo tile throughout their homes and they felt that Saltillo is lacking in style and beauty. But, they did not want to go to the expense of retiling the entire house. I love Saltillo; it is a very old and classic Mexican/Southern Arizona floor material and is very organic and natural since it is made from the earth. The hand-made, more rustic, Saltillo tiles are very practical because if they chip they can be touched up easily and just look as though they are part of the character of the tile.
My favorite way to bring Saltillo up to a high standard is with dark brown Briwax. It is easy to apply and absolutely beautiful when it is buffed up to a soft warm gloss. Be aware Briwax has high VOC’s and it takes several days for the fumes to subside. This soft brown effect is also achieved by floor sealing experts utilizing a colored brown stain/sealer. Two ways to create a beautiful Saltillo floor!
This was a tired old Saltillo floor that required some patching before using a warm brown stain/sealer.
So practical for a heavy traffic area and so rich with the natural rock wall and antique doors on a barn door track.
I really like the rich brown color of the tile and note the gray grout which has become a deep brown; beautiful with the tile!
The warm brown “earth” of this floor wonderfully compliments the antique wood columns and beams.
